Mark Ager

Mark Ager is a distinguished figure in the British brass band community, celebrated for his extensive experience and notable achievements as a conductor. In September 2024, he was appointed Musical Director of the East of England Co-operative Band, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career.

Mark’s conducting journey began in 1984 with the Haverhill Youth Band. During this time, he demonstrated a remarkable ability to inspire and develop young musicians, many of whom went on to successful careers in music. This early experience laid the foundation for his passion and expertise in brass band conducting, which has continued to flourish over the decades.

In 2000, Mark took the helm of the Haverhill Silver Band, a tenure that spanned 18 years. During this period, the band achieved remarkable success, including three victories in the First Section Area Contest (2006, 2011, and 2015) and top five finishes in the Championship Section twice (2007 and 2017). Notably, under his direction, Haverhill Silver Band won the First Section at the Butlins Mineworkers Contest in 2006 and the Crawley Entertainment Contest in 2012.

In August 2018, Mark was appointed Musical Director of the City of Norwich Brass Band, leading them to the National Championship of Great Britain (Third Section Final) in September 2018. He continued to guide the band through various contests, including the London and Southern Counties (Second Section) in March 2023, where they secured a fourth-place finish.

Throughout his career, Mark has conducted over 90 contests, demonstrating his commitment and influence in the brass band scene. His leadership has been instrumental in the success of several bands, including the Clacton-on-Sea Co-operative Band, Soham Comrades Band, and Ware Brass, with notable performances in contests such as the Butlins Mineworkers (First Section) and the Oxfordshire & District BBA Entertainment Contest.

As a musician, Mark has performed under esteemed conductors like Keith Wilkinson, John Berryman, and Bramwell Tovey, competing in major British contests with the GUS Band. His experience as both a player and conductor has enriched his approach to musical direction, fostering excellence and passion within the bands he leads.
